Finding work
You need no prior knowledge of teaching, but a good command of English is advisable. In addition, some online teaching companies require teachers to have a degree in any field.
The course has approximately 120 hours of material, which includes text, reflective tasks and videos. For certificate requirements, you will need to complete the course within six months.
Yes, you can start immediately! You can work at your own pace throughout the course.
You will have lifetime access to the course.
There are two certificate options: Certificate of Competence - this you will get for completing the course within six months and passing all the module test sections with 100% (you can try each test as many times as you need in order to get 100%). Certificate of Achievement - this you will get if you fulfil the above requirements and additionally complete a live teaching demo with a course trainer.
Definitely not! The course requires that you simply go onto the site to access the material. As for teaching itself, the skills you need are determined by the company you work for and they will give you adequate training. If you choose to work for yourself, you will need to know how to use Skype, Zoom or any other online teaching platform.
Having good English skills is certainly a bonus when it comes to teaching English as a foreign language. However, there are certain aspects of learning a language that are necessary to be aware of when teaching, and the course covers these in detail. From how to teach pronunciation using the IPA (International phonetic alphabet) to explaining when and where to use different English tenses, this course will have you covered.
by Dr Trish Cooper, PhD in Linguistics
"A refreshingly concise guide on how to teach English online. This course provides a comprehensive overview of the theory underlying the principles of language teaching, with each discussion point clearly illustrated by relevant and practical examples of
what to do in the classroom.
The video clips selected to illustrate various points present additional insight, while making
each point highly memorable through the use of visual aids and humour.
This course is deceptively fun and easy to read given the amount of detailed information
presented. For example, this course not only focuses on online teaching or on young
learners, but provides guidelines on the distinctions between online and onsite classrooms,
as well as the difference between teaching adults and children, while also considering how
to approach children of different age groups. The use of reflective tasks is designed to get
you thinking about issues before they are discussed in depth, while the quizzes are carefully
constructed to test your understanding on the completion of each module.
The most attractive feature of this course, however, is the opportunity each student is given
for ‘real’ feedback on their teaching practice sessions. The chance to be observed and have
an experienced teacher provide constructive feedback on your teaching is highly unusual
within an online course, and so an extremely valuable component of this course.
This course will give you the tools you need to approach the online classroom with
confidence, whether you’ve enrolled for this course because you’re more familiar with ‘brick-
and-mortar’ classrooms, are unsure as to how to manage young children within an English
class, or are completely new to language teaching."
